Below you find booklets for Local Heritage Trail activities aimed at primary schools in the Douglas area.

Commissioned by Douglas Tidy Towns, funded by Cork City Council and researched and devised by Local Historian, Dr Aoife Bhreatnach, these Local Heritage Trail booklets aim to reinforce and stimulate children’s curiosity, imagination and engagement with the local environment in Douglas.

The key characteristics of learning within the SESE (Social, Environmental and Scientific Education) curriculum is the involvement of children in active investigation of the environment, be that natural, human, social or cultural.

These activities have been devised to enable children to examine events in their own immediate past and the past of their families and local communities.

It is hoped that these trail activities, when used by schools, pupils and their families, will generate an appreciation and awareness of our cultural and historical inheritance in the Douglas area.

All booklets are editable, allowing teachers to adapt the content to their pupils’ needs.  The Junior level activities are suitable for 2nd and 3rd class pupils and the Senior activities are suited to 4th classes upwards.

The maps and images within the booklets can be used as prompts for pre-trail discussion activities in the classroom.

Answer booklets are provided, with additional information for teachers.

We hope that you find these activities to be a valuable resource in the classroom.
